Darbhanga/Patna: The Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES), a public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Railways, has been tasked with conducting a detailed study of passenger movement at Darbhanga Junction.
The study aims to assess crowding patterns and identify infrastructure requirements at one of north Bihar’s busiest railway stations, where passenger volumes have continued to rise.
Railway officials said the findings will be used to improve crowd management and strengthen station facilities.
Daily footfall crosses 1.33 lakh
Darbhanga Junction records an average daily footfall of around 1.33 lakh passengers, according to railway officials.
The station serves travellers from Darbhanga and neighbouring districts, many of whom commute or travel long distances for work, education and healthcare.
Routes connecting Delhi, Mumbai, Punjab, Bengaluru, Secunderabad and Ahmedabad see particularly high passenger demand.
Platforms under pressure
Officials said platform number five experiences the heaviest rush, with platform number one also regularly seeing high crowd density.
The RITES team is expected to visit the station soon to conduct an on-ground assessment.
The study will examine peak congestion periods, train-specific passenger loads, and movement patterns from station entry points to boarding areas.
Infrastructure expansion under review
The assessment will also consider possible infrastructure additions, including new foot overbridges, larger waiting halls, and expanded entry and exit gates.
Railway authorities said the purpose is to prepare the station for future demand while improving safety and reducing inconvenience during both routine travel and festival rush.
Saraswati Chandra, chief public relations officer of East Central Railway, Hajipur, said data related to crowd management was being shared with the agency and that further arrangements would be made after the study.
