Patna: Branded retail outlets are set to open at Patna Junction and other key stations in Bihar after approval from the Railway Board, signalling a shift in Indian Railways towards commercial and passenger-focused redevelopment.
The move will see stations across the Danapur division – including Danapur railway station, Ara railway station, Rajgir railway station and Buxar railway station – equipped with multi-brand retail outlets offering apparel and lifestyle products, allowing passengers to shop while travelling.
Railway officials said a detailed survey has already been completed at Patna Junction, identifying key locations for the first phase of development. Proposed sites include an area near the crew lobby on platform 1, close to the Government Railway Police office and parking zone, as well as space at the far end of platform 10 on the Karbigahiya side.
The survey report has been submitted for final clearance, after which construction is expected to begin. Authorities say the initiative is aimed at improving passenger amenities while also generating additional non-fare revenue.
The project is being developed under the Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation, with discussions underway with private retailers including Reliance Retail, Smart Bazaar and Shoppers Stop. Formal agreements and allocation of retail space are expected to begin from May 2026.
Officials said the plan responds to passenger demand for better shopping and lifestyle facilities at stations. Once implemented, Patna Junction is expected to resemble a high-street retail environment, reflecting a broader push to modernise railway infrastructure.
The model will subsequently be extended to other stations in the division, including Rajendra Nagar Terminal, as part of a wider effort to upgrade station facilities across the region.
