Patna: A heartbreaking road accident in Deoghar, Jharkhand, took the lives of a couple from Patna who were returning from a Kanwar yatra. The incident happened early Tuesday morning around 5:45am at Jamuniya Mod on the Deoghar-Godda main road. A bus carrying devotees collided head-on with a truck carrying gas cylinders. At least five people from Bihar died in the crash, including the couple.
The deceased were identified as 61-year-old Devki Prasad and his 55-year-old wife Samda Devi. They were travelling with their younger son, Ajit, who survived the crash. The couple had just completed their fifth Kanwar yatra together. A few hours before the accident, Samda Devi had spoken to her daughter, Pooja Kumari, over the phone. She told her, “Daughter, take care of everyone… we will come soon.” These were her last words.
Devki Prasad had retired from the Home Guard service in 2023. He and his wife had made a vow to complete the pilgrimage to Baba Baidyanath temple in Deoghar five times together. They offered water at the temple and were on their way to Basukinath when the accident took place. The bus was badly damaged in the crash.
The couple’s sudden death has left their family and village in deep sorrow. Their funeral was held together in their native village in the Dhanarua area of Patna. The family says the memory of their last phone call will always stay with them, as a painful reminder of their final journey.
