Patna: The construction of the underground metro line between Patna Junction and Rukunpura has officially begun, marking a major step forward in the city’s long-awaited metro rail project. The selected agency has started fencing at several key locations on Bailey Road, signalling the start of large-scale underground excavation.
This section forms part of Corridor 1 of the Patna Metro project, which will include a 10.54 km underground stretch with six stations: Patna Junction, Vidyut Bhawan, Vikas Bhawan, Patna Zoo, Raja Bazaar, and Rukunpura.
At present, Patna Metro services operate over a 4.5 km elevated stretch between Patliputra Bus Terminal (Bairiya) and Bhootnath. The new underground extension is expected to link central and western Patna, significantly easing congestion along Bailey Road and connecting high-density urban zones.
Meanwhile, work is also progressing on Corridor 2, which will have 7.92 km of underground tunnels. Metro officials confirmed that the 1.5 km tunnel between Moinul Haque Stadium and Patna University has already been completed.
Construction is now advancing from Patna University to Gandhi Maidan via PMCH, and from Gandhi Maidan to Patna Junction via Akashvani. Once the tunnel boring machines (TBMs) complete this phase, work will begin on the underground segment between Malahi Pakri and Rajendra Nagar.
Corridor 2 will comprise stations at Rajendra Nagar, Moinul Haque, Patna University, PMCH, Gandhi Maidan, Akashvani, and Patna Junction, forming a vital east–west link under the city.
