Patna: In response to rising water levels in the Ganga and Punpun rivers, the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC), in coordination with Budko, has intensified its monsoon preparedness by deploying 364 pumps across 91 drainage pumping stations throughout the city.
Drainage operations are being carried out through 56 permanent and 35 temporary drainage pumping stations (DPS). As the water level of the Ganga rose, pumps were immediately activated, and Budko personnel were stationed at sluice gates to monitor water flow and ensure timely drainage.
All sluice gates near the Ganga and Punpun rivers have been closed due to rising levels. In critical areas such as the Digha Canal, Khanpur, and Barmutta, trolley-mounted pumps are in continuous operation to drain water and prevent waterlogging in surrounding neighbourhoods.
Of the 364 pumps deployed, 265 are electric and 99 are diesel-powered. A total of 256 pumps have been installed at permanent DPS locations, while 83 pumps are functioning at temporary stations, which are set up in flood-prone zones from Patna to Danapur.
Pump installations at major temporary DPS include:
-
Khanpur – 8 trolley-mounted pumps
-
Barmutta – 8 trolley-mounted pumps
-
Digha Canal – 16 trolley-mounted pumps
PMC has also enhanced area-wise drainage capacity:
-
Azimabad – 7 DPS, 33 pumps (30 electric, 3 diesel)
-
Kankarbagh – 7 DPS, 46 pumps (41 electric, 5 diesel)
-
Bankipur – 7 DPS, 35 pumps (29 electric, 6 diesel)
-
Patliputra – 9 DPS, 36 pumps (29 electric, 7 diesel)
-
Nutan Rajdhani – 26 DPS, 105 pumps (95 electric, 10 diesel)
Trolley-mounted pumps have already been installed at all temporary stations, and essential supplies for pump operation—including fuel and maintenance equipment—have been stocked. Officials confirmed that all systems are fully operational to ensure swift drainage during heavy rainfall.
