Patna: Ahead of the upcoming monsoon season, the Patna Municipal Corporation has launched an extensive review of the city’s drainage systems to ensure uninterrupted water flow and prevent flooding. The initiative comes after an interdepartmental meeting chaired by the Municipal Commissioner, who emphasised the need for a coordinated, pre-planned approach across all infrastructure projects.
Officials were instructed to prioritise the completion of pending pre-monsoon works. Where deadlines cannot be met, temporary and permanent alternative drainage arrangements will be put in place, with strict adherence to safety standards. The Commissioner stressed that these measures must translate into tangible action on the ground, not remain limited to documentation.
A zone-wise review of drainage flow was conducted, covering major and auxiliary drains. Special focus was placed on identifying waterlogging-prone areas and reinforcing drainage infrastructure at vulnerable sites. Additional pumping systems and technical upgrades are planned to ensure rapid and effective water removal during heavy rainfall.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of interdepartmental coordination. Officials were directed to promptly resolve any obstructions caused by roadworks, construction, or other infrastructure projects. Sites including metro lines, bridges, pipelines, and ongoing roadworks will be closely monitored to prevent any disruption to drainage operations.
The municipal body is already conducting a citywide desilting and cleaning drive. Damaged manholes are being repaired or replaced, and covers renewed. Daily ward-level inspections are being carried out to monitor progress. The meeting saw participation from officials representing the metro rail project, Road Construction Department, Bihar State Bridge Construction Corporation Limited, Building Construction Department, Water Resources Department, Bihar Medical Services and Infrastructure Corporation Limited, and Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited.
