Patna: A new bus terminal is set to come up in Kanhauli on the outskirts of Patna, a move officials say will significantly ease travel from Bihar to other states. The facility, to be known as the Patli Bus Terminal, will be developed on nearly 50 acres of land in Kanhauli Mauza under Thana No. 69, offering a long-term solution to congestion at the city’s existing transport hubs.
District authorities have stressed that the land acquisition process will not lead to displacement. The Patna District Magistrate, Dr Thiyagarajan S.M., has issued orders prohibiting the sale or purchase of the identified land. Although the plots are officially agricultural, they are currently being used for residential and commercial purposes. Officials said landowners will be compensated and provided with supporting infrastructure such as residential access roads.
Plans for a bus terminal at Kanhauli were first drawn up in 2019 but remained on hold for several years. Its revival comes amid mounting pressure on the Patliputra bus terminal in Bariya, which operates on around 25 acres despite being originally planned for 40. The shortfall in space has made it increasingly difficult to manage both intra-state and inter-state bus services.
Transport officials believe the new terminal will offer substantial relief. Located on the Patna Ring Road, the Patli Bus Terminal is expected to reduce traffic congestion within the city and improve access for buses travelling to other districts and neighbouring states. Estimates suggest that more than 5,000 buses could operate from the facility each day, while the surrounding areas are likely to see a boost in commercial and residential development as a result.
