Patna: Science learning at the Indira Gandhi Science Complex, known as Patna Planetarium, is moving beyond textbooks and lectures. The campus is preparing to launch a Virtual Reality (VR) theatre and a science-themed souvenir shop to give students and visitors immersive, practical experiences.
The souvenir shop, whose tender has been finalised, is under construction and will soon offer science equipment, books, space suits, drones, models and educational toys. Officials said the initiative is designed to create a fair-like atmosphere where “science is everywhere,” encouraging children and young people to engage more deeply with the subject.
Alongside, a 25-seat VR theatre is nearing completion and is expected to be inaugurated by the end of the month. Visitors will be able to experience 3D and 4D shows using simulator chairs and VR headsets, including roller coaster rides, underwater journeys and vibration-based effects.
Currently, the planetarium runs eight shows daily and attracts around 2,000 visitors. The campus has also recently added a restaurant, Bihar Se, designed around a local theme with mud-coloured walls, Mithila paintings, and a menu featuring dishes from across the state, from litti chokha and murga jhor to malpua and fried fish, all served in leaf plates and kulhars.
Officials said the upgrades are part of ongoing efforts to make the Taramandal campus both a hub for science learning and a celebration of Bihar’s culture.
