Patna: Patna witnessed heavy gunfire late on Monday night after a police team clashed with a group of alleged criminals in the Janipur area of Phulwari Sharif. The exchange of fire left a notorious gangster, identified as Deepak, injured before he was arrested.
Police said Deepak, who faces multiple charges including murder, extortion and robbery, was shot in the leg during retaliatory fire and taken to hospital under custody. His associates managed to escape in the darkness, prompting a large-scale search operation in the neighbourhood.
According to officers, the operation was launched on the basis of intelligence that Deepak and his gang were planning a major crime while hiding in Janipur. As the team moved in, the suspects opened fire, triggering the encounter. Senior police officials and a forensic team later arrived at the scene to collect evidence, including weapons and cartridge cases.
Deepak, long feared in Patna, is believed to have evaded several previous police operations. Authorities said his arrest marks a breakthrough in their campaign against organised crime, adding that his capture could weaken his network.
