Patna: Residents of Bihar whose mobile numbers are not linked to their Aadhaar cards can soon update their details without leaving home, thanks to a new initiative by the Postal Department.
Linking a mobile number to Aadhaar has become mandatory, as one-time passwords (OTPs) sent to registered numbers are required for a range of services, including SIM verification and financial transactions. However, for daily wage earners and low-income residents, visiting Aadhaar Seva Kendras often means long queues and lost income, discouraging many from completing the update.
To address this, the Postal Department has launched a pilot project in Patna General Post Office (GPO). Postal workers, including local postmen, will be trained by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to assist residents with linking their mobile numbers to Aadhaar. Once trained, postmen will visit homes across the city to provide the service.
The door-to-door initiative aims to reduce the inconvenience for citizens and prevent misuse of Aadhaar, as verification will continue to be carried out through OTPs sent only to the registered mobile number.
If successful, the pilot in Patna could serve as a model for wider implementation across the state, making Aadhaar updates more accessible to those who cannot afford to take time off work.
