Patna: The Sabhyata Dwar, one of Patna’s most recognisable monuments, is set for a makeover and improved accessibility as part of the city’s River Front Development Project.
Modelled on Delhi’s India Gate and inaugurated in 2018, the 32-metre-high red sandstone structure stands on the banks of the Ganga and has become a favourite among history enthusiasts and tourists. The monument, adorned with inscriptions from figures including Mahatma Buddha, Emperor Ashoka, Mahavira and Greek ambassador Megasthenes, will now be integrated more prominently into the city’s riverfront experience.
Officials said visitors will soon be able to access the site directly from JP Ganga Path in addition to the Gandhi Maidan route. A new grand welcome gate will be constructed on the Ganga bank, and the stretch between the Ganga Research Centre and Sabhyata Dwar will be redeveloped. Plans include a riverside walking track, offering scenic morning strolls and easier access to Chhath Ghat during the Chhath Puja festival.
The project, with an estimated budget of Rs 12.37 crore, is expected to have its tender finalised within a week. The original Sabhyata Dwar complex was built over one acre at a cost of around Rs 5 crore, and is open to the public daily from 11am to 6pm.
