Patna: In a bid to improve its cleanliness ranking under Swachh Survekshan and provide better civic amenities, the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to construct 44 modern toilets and urinals across the city.
The project, estimated at around Rs 4.16 crore, will see the facilities built as per modern standards. The responsibility for operation and maintenance for one year will be entrusted to the concerned agencies to ensure proper upkeep. According to officials, construction work at several locations is already 50 to 65 percent complete.
The move comes ahead of the scheduled visit of a central inspection team under the Swachh Survekshan this month. Anticipating the inspection, the civic body has intensified cleanliness drives across all six zones of the city. The 44 aspirational urinals and toilets are being developed across these zones to strengthen public sanitation infrastructure.
Officials said the initiative aims to address the growing pressure of urban population and curb the problem of open urination in public areas. The corporation believes that strengthening such facilities will not only enhance the city’s appearance but also improve Patna’s ranking in the national cleanliness survey. All zonal officers have been instructed to ensure there is no compromise on quality or timelines.
Maximum Construction in Patliputra and Nootan Rajdhani Zones
Maintenance of public toilets has been one of the biggest challenges for the corporation. Acknowledging this, the administration has stressed that construction alone is not enough and regular usage and cleanliness must be ensured. A special monitoring cell has been constituted to oversee maintenance and operational standards.
Under the project, the highest number of urinals — nine each — are being constructed in the Patliputra and Nootan Rajdhani zones. Eight locations each have been identified in Bankipore and Kankarbagh, while five sites each have been selected in Azimabad and Patna City zones. Separate guidelines have also been issued for the repair and maintenance of old toilets.
