Patna: Facilities at Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park in Patna are set to be expanded with the introduction of online ticketing, enhanced security systems and new visitor attractions, officials said on Wednesday.
The zoo will install about 150 CCTV cameras linked to a central command and control centre, enabling round-the-clock monitoring of activities within the premises as well as the movement of visitors. The initiative is aimed at improving safety and management at one of Bihar’s most visited public spaces.
An official mobile application, expected to be launched by February, will provide detailed information on the zoo’s animals and plant species. Visitors will be able to access information about specific flora and fauna by approaching their enclosures, according to Anand Kishore, additional chief secretary of the forest, environment and climate change department, who announced the plans at a press conference.
Online ticket booking will begin on January 15, while offline ticket sales will continue alongside the new system. From February, the zoo will also introduce a paid tour guide service to offer visitors structured information and educational support during their visit.
Kishore said chief minister Nitish Kumar had recently stressed the need to involve schoolchildren more actively during a visit to the zoo. In response, the authorities plan to organise seminars, information programmes and other educational activities. An annual activity calendar for the zoo will also be prepared.
To boost tourism, a tree-top walkway will be developed within the zoo premises, offering visitors a new way to experience the environment. A souvenir shop and food kiosks are under construction, while a nursery will be established to sell plants to the public at affordable rates.
Further plans include the beautification of both entrance gates, the addition of shaded seating areas, and the creation of 3D wall paintings across the campus. The aquarium and medicinal garden will be upgraded and modernised, and pollution-free vehicles will be introduced for cleaning operations.
The zoo is also set to launch “zoo volunteer” and “zoo friend” programmes, aimed at encouraging public participation in conservation and awareness efforts.
