Patna: In a remarkable development for Bihar’s aviation sector, Purnea Airport has handled more than 1,10,000 passengers within four months of its inauguration, prompting officials to fast-track plans to upgrade the facility to international standards.

Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 17, 2025 the airport has quickly become the preferred gateway for the Seemanchal and Kosi regions. “This airport is not just a matter of convenience for locals; it is the culmination of years of anticipation,” said Deep Prakash Gupta, Airport Director.

Currently, five regular flights operate from Purnea to Delhi, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad, served by IndiGo and Star Air. Passenger demand has consistently exceeded expectations, with most flights fully booked. Local authorities note that the airport’s influence extends beyond Bihar, benefiting neighbouring districts in West Bengal and areas bordering Nepal.

Passenger statistics illustrate the airport’s rapid rise: by December 12, 50,000 travellers had passed through, a number that surged past 100,000 by the end of January. Officials anticipate further growth following the completion of the Manihari-Sahibganj bridge, which will improve regional connectivity.

Plans for expansion are already underway. Fifteen acres of additional land have been allocated for the construction of a permanent, state-of-the-art terminal, featuring world-class facilities and parking for 500 vehicles. The tender process for the project is expected to begin next month, with officials aiming to launch flights to Mumbai, Bengaluru, and eventually international destinations.

For the Seemanchal region, historically seen as underdeveloped, Purnea Airport represents a significant step towards economic growth and connectivity. Once a modest domestic facility, it is now poised to become a major hub in Bihar’s aviation landscape.
