Patna: Tensions flared in the Bihar Legislative Assembly on the third day of the budget session as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav engaged in a sharp verbal confrontation. The exchange took place during discussions on the Governor’s address, with Nitish directly targeting Yadav over allegations of wrongdoing.
Addressing Yadav, CM Nitish said: “Sit down quietly and listen to me. Where did you get the money to lure away six MLAs? You were involved in wrongdoing, that’s why we left you.” The remarks drew a mixed reaction from the House, with ruling party MLAs thumping their desks and opposition members voicing protests.
When Yadav attempted to respond, he intervened again, saying: “Hey, sit down. You’re not a child. I’m from your father’s time. I respect you. I made you who you are.” Yadav, appearing to smile at the rebuke, replied: “You’ll say anything.”
Earlier in the session, Tejashwi Yadav had criticised the government for what he described as a dual approach of “false praise and complete negligence.” Reading out crime statistics, he questioned the state’s law and order situation, accusing BJP members of turning democracy into a “gunocracy.” Due to a leg injury, Yadav sought permission from the Speaker to speak while seated.
The confrontation underscored the high political temperature in the Assembly, as the budget session continues amid sharp exchanges between the ruling coalition and the opposition.
