Patna: A political controversy has emerged in Bihar after allegations surfaced regarding diamond-studded bangles reportedly gifted by former Chief Minister Rabri Devi to folk singer Chhotu Chhaliya during a cultural programme in Patna.
The issue has led to a sharp exchange between the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Janata Dal (United), with demands for an investigation and counter-claims over intent and facts.
Cultural Event in Patna
The incident took place during the 79th birthday celebrations of RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav at his residence on Circular Road in Patna.
A cultural programme featuring folk performances was organised, where Chhotu Chhaliya performed a traditional Sohar song dedicated to Tejashwi Yadav’s son.
Following the performance, Rabri Devi reportedly removed her bangles and gifted them to the singer in a gesture that drew attention from those present.
Claim Over Diamond Bangles
After receiving the jewellery, the singer claimed that the bangles were diamond-studded and described the moment as a significant honour.
He compared the gesture to traditional accounts of patrons gifting jewellery to artists during performances and praised the family’s gesture.
RJD Response to Allegations
RJD MLC Sunil Singh rejected the claims around diamond jewellery and said Rabri Devi does not wear diamond ornaments.
He stated that the issue was being unnecessarily politicised and added that not every shining object can be assumed to be diamond.
Singh also argued that attention should remain on broader public issues rather than the controversy surrounding the gift.
JD(U) Demands Transparency and Probe
Responding to the matter, JD(U) spokesperson Neeraj Kumar raised questions about the authenticity of the jewellery claim.
The party demanded that purchase receipts and tax records be made public if the bangles are indeed diamond-studded.
The JD(U) also sought an investigation by the Enforcement Directorate, questioning whether applicable GST and taxes were paid and calling for documentation related to the jewellery.
Political Exchange Intensifies
The exchange has further deepened the political confrontation between the two parties, with both sides maintaining contrasting positions on the incident.
While RJD leaders have dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, the JD(U) has continued to press for an official inquiry into the matter.
