Patna: The Congress suffered a major setback in the Bihar Assembly elections, winning only six of the 61 seats it contested — marking its second-weakest performance since 2010, when the party had managed just four seats. The wider Mahagathbandhan alliance also struggled, failing to cross the 40-seat mark in a crucial election the alliance had hoped would revive its fortunes.
One of the most striking aspects of the defeat was that the Congress lost even in districts where it had conducted its high-profile Jan Adhikar Yatras, signalling a deeper erosion of organisational strength and voter confidence.
Rahul Gandhi Calls Result “Astonishing”, Says Poll Was “Not Fair From the Start”
Reacting to the outcome, Rahul Gandhi posted on X, thanking the “millions of voters in Bihar” who supported the Mahagathbandhan.
“This result is truly astonishing,” he wrote. “We could not win an election that was not fair from the beginning.”
He added that the Congress and the broader INDIA bloc would soon undertake a detailed review of the election results and devise a “more effective strategy to protect democracy”.
