Rajgir: Rajgir Zoo Safari is expanding visitor facilities and introducing new digital services as tourist footfall continues to rise, driven in part by the growing lion population at the safari.

Zoo Safari Director IAS Ram Sundar M. said the facility currently houses four adult lions and six cubs, making the lion enclosure one of the major attractions for visitors. He said tourists particularly enjoy seeing the entire lion group together.

The director said several measures have also been taken to improve visitor convenience and modernise the safari. An ATM has been installed on the premises with support from the State Bank of India (SBI), while the safari has been converted into a Wi-Fi zone in accordance with government directions.

A QR-based self-check-in ticketing system, modelled on systems used at metro stations, has also been introduced. Visitors can now scan their QR tickets themselves at the turnstile gates, reducing manual ticket verification and helping speed up entry.

Proposals have also been submitted to the government for the purchase of vehicles and other construction-related works at the safari.

Zoo Ambassador Programme for Schoolchildren

The safari has launched a Zoo Ambassador Programme aimed at connecting schoolchildren with wildlife conservation. Applications have so far been received from 42 schools, and the selection process is underway. Children will be inducted into the programme soon, officials said.

The safari has a daily visitor capacity of around 2,000 people. During the Malmas Mela, however, an additional 500-600 tickets were issued to accommodate the increased demand. Extra entry slots were operated from 6 am during the festival.

The director said the Zoo Safari and Nature Safari have also been witnessing heavy visitor footfall during the ongoing Sawan month.

Special Care for Animals During Changing Weather

Zoo officials are taking additional measures to protect animals from changing weather conditions. During periods of inadequate rainfall in summer, water was supplied to water bodies inside the safari using tractors.

With the monsoon underway, roads and buildings are being regularly inspected and repaired to prevent waterlogging and ensure that safari vehicles can move without difficulty.

Veterinary officials also conduct detailed health checks of the animals every day after the safari vehicles return, the director said.

Aviary Emerging as a Favourite Among Children

The aviary, or bird enclosure, has emerged as a popular attraction, particularly among schoolchildren. The facility houses species including Golden Pheasant, Silver Pheasant and Painted Stork.

New selfie and photography points have been developed near the aviary to improve the visitor experience. Officials said the interaction between visitors and birds has been receiving a positive response, with children showing particular interest in the aviary.

With the growing lion population, upgraded visitor facilities and new digital initiatives, Rajgir Zoo Safari is seeking to improve both wildlife management and the overall experience for tourists.
