Purnia: A 24-year-old student of Sharda University in Greater Noida has died by suicide in his hostel room. The student, Shivam Day, was from Purnia in Bihar and was studying engineering. On Friday night, hostel staff found him hanging from the ceiling fan. He was rushed to hospital but doctors declared him dead.
Police found a suicide note in Shivam’s diary. In it, he wrote that no one should be held responsible for his death. He said he had been planning this for a year and that he felt “useless” and “not meant for this world”. He also asked the university to refund his fees to his family and said he wanted his organs to be donated. The note ended with an apology to his father: “Baba, forgive me, I could not become your support.”
His father, Kartik Chand Day, said he had taken loans to pay for Shivam’s studies and accused the university of negligence. He said the administration never told him that Shivam had stopped attending classes, while they kept sending reminders for fees. “If I had known, I would not have let my beloved son die,” he said. Relatives added that Shivam had faced ragging during his first year but had kept his struggles hidden from the family.
The university has said Shivam had not cleared the required grades in his fourth semester and had not re-registered for the new academic session. A university official said his mentor had tried to keep in touch and involve him in academic activities. They also confirmed that the fees already paid would be refunded to the family. This is the second suicide at Sharda University in the past month and the third in Greater Noida, adding to growing concern about mental health support for students.
