Motihari: A group of eight friends from Machhaan village in Motihari went to the Sirsa river for a bath on Tuesday. What started as a fun outing ended in heartbreak when two of them drowned. The victims were Rohit Kumar, 22, and Shyam Kumar, 16.
All eight friends jumped into the river together near Pawan Ghat. While six managed to swim back to safety, Rohit and Shyam went into deeper water. Their feet got stuck in thick water hyacinth, making it hard for them to move. Despite trying hard to come out, they could not escape and drowned.
Other friends quickly informed people in the village. Soon, a large crowd gathered near the river. Divers were called in and both boys were pulled out from the water. They were taken to a nearby nursing home, but doctors declared them dead.
The incident has left the entire village in mourning. Rohit had returned home just 10 days ago from his work outside the state, while Shyam was a student. Police reached the spot and sent the bodies for postmortem. Officials said the bodies have now been handed over to their families.
