Sitamarhi: A heartbreaking incident has come to light from Sitamarhi district in Bihar, where a man killed his wife and then took his own life. The case happened in Basantpur Pakri village, under Riga police station area, late on Sunday night. Police said the man, identified as Jai Kumar Ram, was drunk when he attacked his wife with a sickle. After killing her, he used the same weapon to commit suicide.
The crime was discovered around 2 a.m. when villagers rushed to the spot after hearing about the attack. Hundreds of people gathered at the scene before the police were informed. A team led by Riga police station chief Abhishek Tripathi reached the village and began investigating. Officers recovered the sickle used in the attack and sent both bodies to Sitamarhi Sadar Hospital for post-mortem.
Relatives of the victim said that Jai Kumar had been struggling with alcohol addiction for years. Chanchala, his wife, had repeatedly asked him to give up drinking since their marriage in 2021. Family members said their fights became frequent because of his drinking habits. Her father revealed that Jai Kumar had recently returned from Delhi, where he worked, just 20 days earlier. The news of the tragedy was conveyed to the family by phone in the middle of the night.
Local residents said Jai Kumar often became violent after consuming alcohol and that his addiction had created constant tension in the household. They believe his drinking was the main reason behind the killing. The case has also renewed questions about Bihar’s liquor prohibition law, which has been in force since 2016. Despite the ban, alcohol continues to be easily available in the state, and many villagers have asked how liquor still reaches people so freely.
