Sonepur: The world-famous Sonepur Fair, known as Asia’s largest cattle fair, began today in the Harihar region of Bihar. This fair, which attracts people from all over India and abroad, will continue till December 10. The fair was earlier scheduled to begin on November 3, but it was postponed due to the Bihar Assembly elections. With the official start today, the excitement among traders, visitors, and local residents has reached new heights.
To ensure the fair runs smoothly and peacefully, District Magistrate Aman Sameer and Senior Superintendent of Police Dr. Kumar Ashish inspected the entire fairground on Saturday. During their visit, they reviewed arrangements for security, traffic, and law and order. They also interacted with police personnel stationed at various points and instructed them to remain alert throughout the fair. The officials emphasised that safety and convenience for the public are top priorities.
The Saran Police have made extensive preparations for the event. CCTV cameras have been installed for monitoring, and a temporary police station and control room have been set up to handle emergencies. Separate police pickets have been deployed across the area to maintain peace. For visitors’ comfort, a women’s help centre and an information centre have also been opened. Special traffic arrangements have been made, including one-way routes, dedicated parking areas, and alternative roads for smooth movement.
The Sonepur Fair holds great religious and historical importance. According to legend, an elephant was once bathing in the Ganges when a crocodile caught it. The elephant prayed to Lord Vishnu, who appeared and saved it by killing the crocodile. Since then, the fair has been held every year at the confluence of the Ganges and Gandak rivers, symbolising faith and divine power.
The fair is famous not only for its religious value but also for its wide range of trade activities. Thousands of animals, including elephants, horses, camels, cows, buffaloes, and birds, are brought here for sale and purchase. Visitors also enjoy cultural programmes, boat races, and wrestling competitions that take place during the event.
Every year, millions of people visit the Sonepur Fair to experience this blend of devotion, tradition, and festivity. The fair stands as the pride of the Harihar region and continues to reflect Bihar’s cultural richness and heritage, drawing crowds with its vibrant atmosphere and timeless charm.
