Sonepur/Patna : Preparations are underway for the world-famous Harihar Kshetra Sonepur Mela, which will begin on November 22, 2026. The district administration is planning a grand opening, with Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary expected to inaugurate the fair.
The main Kartik Purnima celebrations will take place from November 23 to 24, when a large number of devotees are expected to visit the historic fair.
A meeting to review preparations was held at the sub-divisional headquarters auditorium in Sonepur on Saturday evening under the chairmanship of Saran District Magistrate Vaibhav Srivastava.
Focus on Cleanliness, Security and Traffic Management
The meeting focused on arrangements for devotees, tourists, traders and visitors expected to attend the fair.
Officials and local representatives discussed cleanliness, drinking water, lighting, road connectivity, traffic management, parking, security, sanitation and healthcare facilities.
Local residents urged the administration to complete preparations before the fair begins and pay particular attention to cleanliness, removal of encroachments, adequate lighting and smooth traffic movement.
Officials directed the concerned departments to accelerate preparations and ensure that essential facilities are available across the fairgrounds.
Saints and Spiritual Leaders May Be Invited
Sonepur MLA Vinay Kumar Singh suggested inviting saints and spiritual leaders from across the country to the fair.
He proposed that the religious figures be given a place of honour during the inauguration ceremony. He also called for special arrangements to enable senior citizens and persons with disabilities to visit the fair comfortably.
The MLA further suggested that religious storytellers, or katha vachaks, be allowed to conduct spiritual and religious programmes at the main pandal during the daytime.
AI Exhibition Proposed at the Fair
In a move aimed at blending tradition with modern technology, Singh also proposed an AI technology exhibition at the Sonepur Mela.
The objective is to showcase modern technological developments while preserving the fair’s historic and cultural identity. Organisers believe such an initiative could make the event more appealing to visitors from Bihar as well as tourists from other parts of India and abroad.
Entertainment Licensing Process May Be Simplified
The MLA also suggested simplifying the licensing process for traditional entertainment activities, including games and shows.
The proposal is aimed at encouraging a wider range of cultural and entertainment programmes during the fair while reducing procedural hurdles for organisers and participants.
Demand for ‘Harihar Kshetra’ Commemorative Postage Stamp
During discussions on preserving the fair’s heritage, a proposal was also raised for a commemorative postage stamp dedicated to Harihar Kshetra.
The demand reflects the historical and religious importance of the Sonepur Mela, which attracts devotees, tourists, traders and artisans from different parts of the country.
Administration Seeks Public Cooperation
Local residents highlighted the importance of the fair to Bihar’s historical, religious and cultural identity and assured the administration of their cooperation in making the event successful.
With large crowds expected during the fair, the administration is preparing to strengthen arrangements for security, sanitation, traffic management and public convenience.
Officials have appealed to visitors and local residents to cooperate with the administration and help maintain cleanliness, safety and order throughout the Sonepur Mela.
