Patna: The state’s Transport Department has taken a major step to improve road safety by expanding its online e-challan system to 41 toll plazas. Vehicles without valid insurance, fitness certificates, or pollution control documents will now automatically receive fines as they pass through these toll points.
Transport Secretary Mr Raj Kumar said the system, previously operational at 31 toll plazas, had delivered positive results. “Seeing the impact, we have extended the system to additional tolls to enforce compliance and enhance road safety across the state,” he explained.
The e-detection system is integrated with the central vehicle registration database and supported by the National Informatics Centre (NIC). Cameras at toll plazas scan vehicle number plates or FASTags and verify documents in real time. If any required certificate is missing or expired, an e-challan is automatically generated, ensuring immediate enforcement.
Mr Kumar appealed to vehicle owners to keep their insurance, fitness, and pollution certificates up to date. “This system increases transparency, strengthens enforcement, and helps reduce the risks posed by vehicles that do not meet safety standards,” he added.
