Patna: The Supreme Court of India has directed independent MP Pappu Yadav to move the Patna High Court in connection with his plea seeking an upgrade of his security cover from the ‘Y’ category to the ‘Z’ category.
A bench of the court observed that the matter, which concerns alleged threats to Yadav’s life, is already pending before the high court and should be pursued there through appropriate listing and procedural applications.
Yadav, who represents Purnia in Bihar, has argued that his existing security arrangement is inadequate in light of what he describes as serious threats. In his petition, he has specifically cited concerns involving the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, and has sought enhanced protection from both central and state authorities.
According to court records, the Patna High Court had issued notice in the case on November 19, 2024. However, the matter has yet to be listed for hearing, prompting concerns from his legal counsel over procedural delays.
During the proceedings, the Supreme Court advised the petitioner to file a formal application before the high court and request that the matter be listed for an urgent hearing. It indicated that the high court is competent to pass appropriate orders on the request for enhanced security.
In India, security cover categories such as ‘Y’ and ‘Z’ denote the level of protection provided by armed personnel. The ‘Y’ category typically involves around 11 security personnel, while the ‘Z’ category includes approximately 22, reflecting a higher perceived threat level.
The case will now return to the Patna High Court, where the next hearing date is expected to be set following procedural compliance. A decision on the request for upgraded security is likely to follow judicial consideration at that level.
