Bagaha/Patna: A tense situation unfolded along the India-Nepal border in Bihar’s Susta region after villagers from Nepal’s Susta village confronted personnel of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) who had attempted to stop construction work on disputed land.
Following the incident, the SSB lodged a complaint with the Valmikinagar police station, where an FIR has been registered and an investigation has begun.
SSB Says Construction Violated Status Quo
According to a written complaint submitted by the Assistant Commandant of the SSB’s Rampurva ‘G’ Company, the force received information at around 11.40 am on August 2 that construction work was underway in the disputed border area.
An SSB patrol team reached the site and asked that the work be stopped, citing the existing status quo arrangement governing the disputed territory between India and Nepal.
Villagers Opposed Move
The complaint states that around 150 to 200 villagers from Nepal’s Susta village gathered at the site and objected to the SSB’s attempt to halt the construction.
The confrontation briefly heightened tensions in the border area. However, according to the SSB, its personnel exercised restraint and prevented the situation from escalating into violence.
The force said standing instructions require both sides to maintain the status quo in the disputed region, and that the construction activity and subsequent protest raised concerns over public order along the international border.
Police Register FIR
Based on the SSB’s complaint, the Valmikinagar police have registered a case and launched an investigation.
Station House Officer Manoj Kumar said the situation is currently under control.
“A case has been registered based on the application received from the SSB regarding the Susta border dispute. The police are investigating the entire matter. The situation in the border area is currently normal, but security agencies are maintaining constant vigilance to ensure no untoward situation arises,” he said.
Police and security agencies continue to monitor the area as the investigation proceeds.
