Mumbai/ Patna: Just days after stunning cricket fans with a blazing century, 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi of Bihar faced a harsh reality check on Thursday as he was dismissed for a duck in Rajasthan Royals’ high-stakes IPL clash against Mumbai Indians.
Opening the innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav lasted only two balls before falling to Deepak Chahar, who had him caught by Will Jacks. His early dismissal marked the first wicket loss for Rajasthan and dealt a blow to the team’s hopes of securing a playoff spot. If Rajasthan lose this match, they will be eliminated from the tournament.
The sharp contrast comes after Vaibhav’s explosive debut innings, where he etched his name in IPL history. In the last match, the young right-hander smashed a 101 off just 38 balls, including 11 sixes and 7 fours, leading Rajasthan Royals to a dominant 8-wicket victory.
With that innings, Vaibhav became the youngest player ever to score both a half-century and a century in IPL history. He reached his fifty with a four, and his century with a six, surpassing records previously held by seasoned players. His 35-ball century was the fastest by an Indian in the tournament, beating Yusuf Pathan’s 37-ball ton in 2010, and ranking only behind Chris Gayle’s 30-ball century for the fastest overall in IPL history.
