Patna: Bihar politics is witnessing fresh tension as the Janata Dal United (JDU) has raised concerns about Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav’s foreign trip. The party has suggested that Yadav might be accompanied by Rameez Nemat, a politician from Uttar Pradesh with a criminal history. There are also claims that Deva Gupta, a notorious criminal from Motihari, may be in contact with Yadav during his trip. JDU spokesperson Neeraj Kumar has written a letter to the Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) urging close monitoring of the trip to ensure no threat to law and order.
Rameez Nemat is a resident of Balrampur in Uttar Pradesh. Born in 1986, he studied at Delhi Public School, Mathura Road, and later completed Political Science and MBA from Jamia Millia Islamia. Nemat was active in cricket from a young age and played for Delhi from Under-14 to Under-19, later captaining the Jharkhand Under-22 team. He became politically active after marrying Zeba, daughter of former MP Rizwan Zaheer, in 2017. Since then, he has been involved in election management and political strategy, reportedly working closely with Tejashwi Yadav.
However, Nemat’s career has also been marked by serious criminal allegations. Reports suggest he has 11 criminal cases registered against him, including a 2022 murder case in Tulsipur and another in Kaushambi district. The National Security Act and the Gangster Act were applied against him, and he was released on bail in April 2025. The JDU has warned that if Yadav is associated with people who have criminal records, it could be a serious risk to Bihar’s law and order.
The JDU letter also mentions Deva Gupta, a well-known criminal from Motihari. Gupta is reportedly on the police’s list of 100 most wanted criminals, with 28 serious cases including murder, extortion, and land grabbing. His wife, Preeti Kumari, is the mayor of Motihari Municipal Corporation, while Gupta himself remains absconding. The party has requested the Bihar DGP to closely monitor Tejashwi Yadav’s foreign travel and his interactions with suspicious individuals to prevent any potential threat to the state.
