Patna: Bollywood’s celebrated playback singer Udit Narayan Jha has once again struck a chord with his roots. On Friday evening, he released a new Maithili Chhath song titled “Choumukh Diyari” at an event in Mumbai, marking a heartfelt tribute to the ancient festival of Chhath Puja.
The song, presented by MJRK Event Private Limited with the support of Sulabh International, brings together devotional fervour, cultural nostalgia, and regional pride. The launch event saw the presence of several dignitaries, including Nitya Pathak, Executive Coordinator of Sulabh International, who congratulated Udit Narayan and the production team for “creating a song that beautifully captures the essence of Chhath and the devotion of Maithil culture.”
In a touching moment, Udit Narayan not only lent his voice to the song but also appeared in the music video. Performing in his mother tongue, Maithili, the Padma Bhushan awardee expressed his emotional connection to Mithila and the festival, saying he felt “deeply honoured to dedicate this song to the land and language that shaped his identity.”
“I have always carried Mithila in my heart,” said Udit Narayan during the launch. “Singing in Maithili for Chhath Puja is not just an artistic act—it’s a prayer, a celebration, and a tribute to Maa Maithili.”
The video, directed by Santosh Jha and produced by Manorama Jha, features lyrics written and sung by Deepika Jha. The song’s visual and musical aesthetics evoke traditional Chhath rituals—the serene ghats, the glow of diyas, and the devotion of women offering prayers to Surya Dev and Chhathi Maiya.
Speaking at the event, Nitya Pathak described the festival as “a living symbol of women’s empowerment,” noting that Chhath Puja has been led and nurtured by women for generations. “This song,” she said, “not only celebrates the divine energy of the sun but also the strength and grace of women who uphold this tradition.”
