Patna/Bagaha: Administrative work for the expansion of Valmikinagar airport in Bihar’s West Champaran district has picked up pace, with officials moving ahead on land acquisition for key infrastructure projects.
The proposed expansion includes an extended runway, a new terminal building and a dedicated approach road, according to district officials.
A team from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) recently inspected the site and reviewed the project with local authorities.
AAI team reviews project site
AAI officials, accompanied by Bagaha-II circle officer Mohammad Wasim Akram, inspected the proposed areas for the runway, terminal building and access road.
Officials said detailed discussions were held based on project maps to assess the feasibility and planning requirements.
On Saturday, district land acquisition officer Rakesh Kumar and the circle officer led a team of revenue staff and surveyors to carry out demarcation of the identified land parcels.
Runway extension planned
According to the administration, the existing runway is proposed to be extended by around 800 metres in the initial phase.
Officials said the upgraded facility would initially support the operation of smaller aircraft. Additional land acquisition has also been initiated to allow for future expansion, including the possibility of handling larger aircraft.
Tourism and trade expected to benefit
Residents and local stakeholders say the airport’s development could improve connectivity and provide a boost to tourism, trade and mobility in the region.
Valmikinagar, which is home to the Valmiki Tiger Reserve, attracts domestic and international tourists. Better air access is expected to strengthen the local economy and support the wider tourism sector.
Officials have not yet announced a timeline for the completion of the project.
