Patna: Vijay Kumar Sinha, a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, was sworn in today as Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister for a second term, marking a significant moment in the state’s political landscape. The oath of office and secrecy was administered by the Governor at a ceremony held at Gandhi Maidan in Patna.
Sinha, who previously held the Deputy Chief Minister post, is widely regarded for his administrative experience and political acumen. He has also served as Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly and Minister of Labour Resources, where he oversaw several key initiatives. His appointment underlines the BJP’s strategy of relying on seasoned leaders within the newly formed National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government following the 2025 assembly elections.
The swearing-in ceremony drew top leaders, including Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, senior BJP officials, JD(U) leaders, and representatives of other NDA allies. BJP MLAs and supporters filled Gandhi Maidan, greeting Sinha with thunderous applause as he took the stage. Observers noted the display of political strength and the confidence the party and its allies place in his leadership.
Sinha’s political journey began in the organisational wing of the BJP, where he held several roles aimed at strengthening the party at the grassroots level. Known for his clean image and public appeal, he has been recognised as an influential figure in Bihar politics. During his previous tenure as Deputy Chief Minister, he earned a reputation for active and strict administration, and his management of legislative proceedings as Speaker was widely commended.
With his second term, Sinha is expected to assume greater responsibilities, particularly in areas critical to Bihar’s development such as employment, infrastructure, health, education, and electricity. Sources suggest he may be entrusted with departments that allow him to accelerate projects at the grassroots level, reflecting the BJP’s emphasis on tangible governance outcomes.
Opposition parties are reportedly monitoring Sinha’s actions closely. During his previous term, his assertive presence in the Assembly and pointed critiques of the opposition drew attention. Yet, Sinha has emphasised a focus on development over politics, stating after the oath-taking, “The overall development of Bihar is my first priority. Together, we will build a strong and developed Bihar.”
