Patna: As the world marks World Wildlife Day, Bihar’s wild heart beats strong with forests, rivers, wetlands and sanctuaries that offer nature lovers unforgettable encounters with rare species, birds, big cats and river giants. From sprawling tiger reserves to serene birdwatching spots, here are the top ten wildlife destinations in the state worth exploring:

1. Valmiki Tiger Reserve – The Jewel Of North Bihar

Stretching across the dense forests of West Champaran, Valmiki Tiger Reserve is Bihar’s first and most celebrated tiger reserve. A mosaic of Sal forests, grasslands and riverine habitats along the India–Nepal border, it is home to 54 Royal Bengal tigers, leopards, sloth bears and herbivores such as chital and sambar. Safari trails and watchtowers offer thrilling wildlife sightings amid pristine wilderness, especially between winter and early summer.

2. Rajgir Zoo Safari – A New Era Of Wildlife Tourism

Located near the historic town of Rajgir, the Rajgir Zoo Safari is an immersive wildlife experience where animals roam in large, naturalistic enclosures. Visitors can spot lions, tigers, sloth bears and an array of herbivores from safari vehicles. Set against rolling hills and lush landscapes, the safari combines conservation awareness with family-friendly adventure.

3. Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary – Bihar’s Emerging Tiger Hub

The sprawling Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary sprawls along the Kaimur hills and is proposed to become Bihar’s second tiger reserve. A haven for leopards, wild boar, deer and a plethora of birdlife, the sanctuary’s rugged terrain, waterfalls and dense jungle make it an enticing destination for avid trekkers and wildlife watchers.

4. Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park (Patna Zoo)

Also known simply as Patna Zoo, this century-old biological park in the heart of the capital blends traditional zoo charm with modern conservation efforts. Visitors can see big cats, primates, reptiles and colourful birds. It has a Rhino conservation centre as well owing to high number of the Rhinos. Educational exhibits and open enclosures make it ideal for school groups, families and anyone seeking wildlife close to the city.

5. Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary, Bhagalpur

Flowing along the Ganga near Bhagalpur, the Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary is a rare river sanctuary dedicated to protecting the endangered Gangetic dolphin. These graceful “national aquatic animals” can be spotted surfacing in the deep pools of the Ganga, making this sanctuary a unique attraction for wildlife enthusiasts and nature photographers.

6. Nagi Nakti Bird Sanctuary – A Birdwatcher’s Paradise

A hidden gem for avian lovers, the Nagi Nakti Bird Sanctuary in Bihar’s countryside draws migratory birds from as far as Siberia and Central Asia. Its tranquil lakes and reed-covered banks host species such as herons, storks, egrets and pintails, especially between winter and early spring.

7. Bhimbandh Wildlife Sanctuary – Myth And Nature Combined

Perched in the Kharagpur hills in Munger, Bhimbandh Wildlife Sanctuary combines natural beauty with local folklore. Pebble streams, woodlands and grasslands shelter langurs, deer and a variety of birds. The sanctuary’s lakes and picnic spots also provide a perfect backdrop for nature walks and weekend family trips.

8. Kabar Lake, Begusarai – A Ramsar-Listed Wetland

Recognised as a Ramsar site, Kabar Lake near Begusarai is one of Bihar’s most important wetlands. It attracts waterbirds, waders and migratory species, offering excellent birdwatching opportunities from reservoir edges and observation points. Conservation efforts here protect aquatic habitats and support sustainable tourism.

9. Proposed Blackbuck Sanctuary, Buxar – Celebrating Grassland Giants

Bihar is planning its first blackbuck sanctuary in the Baralev (Pilapur) Mauja of Nawanagar block in Buxar district, a long-awaited step towards protecting the elegant antelopes that once roamed the plains. Though still in the pipeline, this sanctuary is expected to become a major draw for wildlife enthusiasts and eco-tourists once established.

10. Rajgir–Vulture And Reptile Spots (Bonus Wild Experience)

While not a formal protected area, Rajgir’s surrounding hills are known for vulture sightings and varied reptile life. Rock monitors, snakes and flying predators add another dimension to the region’s wildlife mosaic for those keen on exploring off-beat natural habitats.

Why Bihar Matters On World Wildlife Day

From the stealthy Bengal tiger to the contemplative dolphin; from migratory flocks to blackbuck plains, Bihar’s wildlife showcases the state’s biodiversity beyond cultural and historical splendour. Whether you’re a seasoned birdwatcher or a family seeking nature escapes, these destinations reveal a wild side that is as rich and varied as the land itself.

Best Time To Visit:

• Tiger reserves and forest zones: October to March

• Dolphin sanctuary: Winter and pre-summer months

• Bird sanctuaries and wetlands: December to February

As climate change and habitat pressures grow, visiting and supporting these sanctuaries also helps conservation efforts across Bihar. Pack your binoculars the wild calls.
