Patna: The Bihar government has extended Y category security cover to three political leaders after a recent review of threat perceptions. BJP MP Gopalji Thakur, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) MP from Samastipur Shambhavi and Congress state president and Kutumba MLA Rajesh Kumar were included in the list during a meeting of the State Security Committee.
Following the decision, the state Home Department issued a directive to the Director General of Police and the Special Branch to make immediate arrangements.
Y category security in India typically involves eight personnel, including one or two commandos, drawn from the police or central paramilitary forces. The cover ensures round-the-clock monitoring of movement and residence, and is extended to individuals deemed under specific threat by the government.
Security categories in India range from X and Y to the highest levels of Z+, and SPG cover reserved for the prime minister. The allocation is based on assessments made by security agencies of the risks faced by leaders, judges, industrialists, activists and other public figures.
