Patna: The Bihar Transport Department has intensified its crackdown on traffic violators by blacklisting the Registration Certificates (RCs) of vehicles with long-pending e-challans. Vehicles with blacklisted RCs will now face seizure if found plying on roads without clearing their outstanding fines.
According to officials, more than two lakh e-challans for traffic violations remain pending across the state. The Transport Department has shared the list of blacklisted vehicles with the Traffic Police to facilitate enforcement.
In Patna alone, the RCs of around 35,000 vehicles have been blacklisted for failing to pay e-challans despite repeated notices from the department. Officials said district-wise lists are also being prepared to blacklist nearly one lakh more vehicles across Bihar.
The department has issued multiple notices to vehicle owners over the years, asking them to clear their pending fines. However, many owners have failed to respond, with some e-challans remaining unpaid for the past seven to eight years. Several of these vehicles have five or more pending traffic challans.
Following continued non-compliance, District Transport Officers (DTOs) initiated the blacklisting process in two phases, preventing the vehicles from carrying out registration-related services until the dues are cleared.
Majority of Blacklisted Vehicles Are Two-Wheelers
Of the 35,000 vehicles blacklisted in Patna district, nearly 29,000 are two-wheelers.
The pending e-challans were issued for various traffic violations, including riding without a helmet, wrong-side driving, pillion riders not wearing helmets, overspeeding, and other breaches of traffic rules.
The Transport Department has warned vehicle owners to clear their pending e-challans at the earliest to avoid seizure of their vehicles and further legal action. The department is expected to continue similar enforcement measures across other districts in the coming weeks.
