Patna: Youth Congress leaders and workers staged a protest in Patna on Tuesday against the allotment of land to the Adani Group in Bhagalpur for a super thermal power plant, triggering clashes with police.
The demonstration, led by Youth Congress National President Udaybhanu Chib and State President Garib Das, began from Sadakat Ashram before moving towards the Chief Minister’s residence. Protesters were stopped by police at Rajapur Pul, but many broke through barricades and staged a sit-in on the road.
Police used batons to disperse the crowd after several workers lay down on the road. Officers dragged protesters into vehicles and detained multiple leaders and workers.
The Youth Congress accused the state government of “handing over farmers’ land for free” to Adani, alleging that 1,050 acres and thousands of mango trees in Pirpainti, Bhagalpur, had been leased for just one rupee annually. Spokesperson Gyan Ranjan reiterated that the deal was a “betrayal of farmers” and vowed continued agitation.
Authorities have not yet issued a statement on the detentions.
