Patna: The plan to set up hundreds of new shops on Patna’s Marine Drive has been put on hold. The Municipal Corporation had decided to build around 500 pre-fabricated shops from Digha Rotary to LCT Ghat, which were to be given to people on application. Many had already applied, but the process was stopped because of floods in the Ganga.
At present, many families living on the river bank have been affected by the rising water and temporary shelters have been set up for them along the roadside. Officials said that only after the monsoon is over will the shops be allotted, so that relief work for flood victims can continue smoothly.
According to Patna Smart City’s Public Relations Officer Priya Saurabh, the shops are being made in Naubatpur block in three sizes — 600, 480 and 240 square feet. These steel shops will have seating arrangements, attractive lighting and toilets. The project is being built at a cost of Rs 15.46 crore.
Once these vending zones are ready, roadside carts and khomcha stalls will be removed. Every shop will have fixed rent, proper security and facilities for both shopkeepers and customers. Authorities believe this will bring more order to Marine Drive and give Patna a modern look.
