Patna: Pitru Paksha, a 16-day period of remembrance dedicated to ancestors, will be observed in 2025 with particular importance placed on rituals such as offering water, known as tarpan.
Falling after the full moon in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada, Pitru Paksha is regarded as a sacred time in Hindu tradition. It is believed that during this period ancestors descend to earth, and families perform rituals to ensure peace for their souls. By carrying out shraddha and tarpan in accordance with prescribed customs, devotees believe they receive blessings of prosperity and harmony.
One of the central rituals involves offering water to forebears. According to tradition, participants should face south, hold water, sesame seeds and kush grass in their hands, and recite the mantra “Om Pitrudevaya Namah”. The use of a copper vessel is considered particularly auspicious.
Scriptures highlight the importance of performing these rites during Kutupa Vela – the period between sunrise and around 12.24pm – when tarpan is said to bring the greatest spiritual benefit.
The observance of Pitru Paksha is believed to bring peace to the departed, while ensuring happiness, prosperity and success for the family.
