Patna: Preparations for the Jiutiya fast have started in homes across Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh. The three-day festival is very special for mothers, who keep the fast to pray for the long life and good health of their children. The ritual will begin on Saturday with Nahai-Khai, when mothers take a bath and eat a special meal before starting their strict fast.
On Sunday, women will observe a Nirjala fast, which means they will not eat or drink anything throughout the day. They will bathe in rivers and ponds early in the morning, worship the Bariyar plant and visit temples to offer prayers. They will also listen to the story of Jimut Vahan Devta, which is an important part of the Jiutiya tradition. According to the story, Siyar (jackal) and Chilho (bird) once observed the fast. Siyar broke the rules and ate food, causing the early death of her seven sons. When she later followed the fast correctly, her sons came back to life.
On Monday, mothers will break their fast after offering food to their ancestors. This ritual, called Parana, takes place on Navami Tithi, the day after Ashtami when the main fasting is done. Women also tie a knot in a special Jiutiya thread, which they wear as a symbol of protection for their children.
Markets have been very crowded since Friday morning. People were seen buying milk, curd, and chuda (flattened rice), which are important for the festival. Dairy shops were busy since 5 am as families queued up to get fresh milk to make curd at home. Shopkeepers said that sales were very high as everyone was preparing for the occasion.
