Patna: The Indian Constitution has the strength to overcome every national challenge and has been central to deepening democracy over the past 75 years, Patna Sahib MP and former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Saturday.
Speaking at the inaugural Bhuvneshwari Dayal Memorial Lecture at the Secretariat’s Convention Hall, Prasad underlined that India’s governance is firmly rooted in the people’s mandate, which ensures accountability not just of governments but of all constitutional bodies.
“The Constitution empowers every citizen, irrespective of religion, caste, language or region,” he said, while paying tribute to India’s founding leaders including Rajendra Prasad, Jawaharlal Nehru, Vallabhbhai Patel and Abul Kalam Azad. He praised Patel’s role in uniting more than 550 princely states into a single nation, calling it a defining moment in realising the Constitution’s spirit of unity.
The event, organised by B.D. College on the theme India’s Constitutional Journey over the Past 75 Years, was attended by Bihar University Service Commission chairman Girish Kumar Chaudhary, Pataliputra University vice-chancellor Upendra Prasad Singh, Magadh University vice-chancellor S.P. Shahi, faculty members, and students.
In her presidential address, college principal Ratna Amrit acknowledged the contributions of Bhuvneshwari Dayal, former Patna mayor K.N. Sahay, and academic Nirmal Kumar Srivastava in establishing the college. She said the construction of a new building was close to completion and that preparations for NAAC accreditation were underway. She also announced that the college canteen would soon be managed by Jeevika women.
