Patna: The Bihar government has announced a tax exemption of up to 50% for owners scrapping private and commercial vehicles older than 15 years, in a bid to encourage the phasing out of old and polluting automobiles.
The Bihar government said that vehicle owners who opt for scrapping will receive exemptions on registration of new vehicles, outstanding taxes, and penalties. Currently, the state provides a 90% waiver on liabilities for both transport and non-transport vehicles, along with a full waiver on penalties.
Owners wishing to scrap their private vehicles must apply via the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways portal. Once approved, Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF) centres purchase and dismantle the vehicles. Bihar currently has two authorised scrapping centres – Nilium Scrapping Centre in Patna and SK Enterprises in Vaishali.
The initiative is part of wider efforts by the Bihar government to reduce vehicular pollution and promote the use of newer, cleaner vehicles in the state.
