Saran: Bihar is preparing to make a major breakthrough in healthcare with the construction of the world’s largest eye hospital in Mastichak, Saran. This 1,000-bed hospital is expected to be completed by March 2027 and will perform 300,000 free eye surgeries every year. The hospital aims to provide world-class treatment to patients across Bihar, especially those from rural areas who currently have limited access to advanced eye care. It will also become a centre for social initiatives, including women’s empowerment programs and sports training for children in nearby villages.
The hospital will have 19 modern operation theaters and 50 examination rooms, allowing thousands of patients to receive treatment every day. Outpatient services are expected to cover around 1,200 patients daily. The facility will operate in collaboration with the Shankara Eye Foundation, USA, and will also implement the central government’s Ayushman Bharat scheme to provide affordable healthcare to those in need. The new hospital will build on the work of the existing Akhand Jyoti Hospital, which has been serving the community since 2005 and has performed over 12 lakh surgeries, 80% of them free of cost.
In addition to medical treatment, the hospital plans several initiatives for social development. Co-founder Mrityunjay Tiwari explained that programs will be launched to empower women and teach sports, such as football, to rural children. These programs are designed to improve both the physical and mental skills of children while encouraging girls to participate in sports. Chief Economic Advisor Anantha Nageswaran highlighted that combining healthcare with social initiatives is essential for rural development and will serve as a model for other states.
The hospital is expected to transform healthcare access in Bihar, providing high-quality treatment for eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, and other vision problems. It will also become a centre for education, social welfare, and community activities. By March 2027, local and rural residents will be able to directly benefit from these facilities, making the hospital a symbol of hope, development, and progress for the region.
