Patna: The Nitish Kumar government in Bihar has announced sweeping financial support for lawyers, Vikas Mitras and education workers, in a move seen as a major pre-election boost to key professional groups across the state.
Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary on Sunday declared that all newly enrolled lawyers in Bihar would receive a stipend of Rs 5,000 per month for three years, with payments beginning retrospectively from January 1, 2024. The stipends will be routed through the Bihar State Bar Council. Advocate associations, meanwhile, will receive a one-time grant of Rs 5 lakh to set up e-libraries, while Rs 30 crore will be allocated to the Bihar Advocates Welfare Trust Committee.

Chaudhary added that advocates falling outside the income tax bracket would be eligible for assistance from the Chief Minister’s Medical Assistance Fund. Women lawyers will also benefit from dedicated ‘pink toilets’ in bar association premises. “Under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, development work is continuously underway for the benefit of all communities in Bihar,” Chaudhary said in a social media post.
Earlier on Sunday, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar himself announced a raft of benefits for Vikas Mitras, field workers engaged under the Bihar Mahadalit Vikas Mission. Each will receive a one-time grant of Rs 25,000 to purchase a tablet for maintaining beneficiary records, while their transport allowance has been raised from Rs 1,900 to Rs 2,500 per month and stationery allowance from Rs 900 to Rs 1,500.
The government also extended benefits to grassroots education workers, including those at Talimi Markaz centres. Each worker will receive Rs 10,000 to buy smartphones to support digital activities, while funding for teaching materials has been nearly doubled from Rs 3,405 to Rs 6,000 per centre per year.
