Patna: Patna is witnessing a significant surge in vehicle purchases as the state’s roads fill with more two-wheelers, e-rickshaws, and tractors. According to the latest data from the Transport Department of Bihar, vehicle registrations have increased by 38.53% over the past four years. In the financial year 2021-22, 997,992 vehicles were registered, which rose sharply to 1,382,524 in 2024-25, highlighting a growing demand for personal and commercial transport across the state.
The rising popularity of two-wheelers has been particularly striking. Motorcycles accounted for a major share of registrations, with 1,090,189 motorcycles registered in 2024-25, up from 810,625 in 2021-22. This increase underscores the growing reliance on affordable and convenient personal transport among Bihar’s residents, especially in urban and semi-urban areas where motorcycles remain the preferred mode of travel.
Bihar is also seeing a notable rise in the registration of e-rickshaws, reflecting the push towards sustainable and eco-friendly transport solutions. A total of 76,201 e-rickshaws were registered in the 2024-25 fiscal year. At the same time, the agricultural sector is benefiting from increased access to tractors, with 19,932 agricultural tractors registered in 2024-25 compared to 13,268 in 2021-22. Commercial tractors and cargo vehicles are also seeing steady growth, with 14,542 and 24,692 registrations, respectively.
Officials from the Transport Department say the increase in registrations reflects rising income levels, urbanisation, and the need for more efficient personal and commercial transport in Bihar. Experts also note that the growing adoption of e-rickshaws and small commercial vehicles signals a shift towards cleaner and more versatile mobility options. With vehicle demand showing no signs of slowing, the state’s transport infrastructure may soon need further expansion to accommodate the boom.
