Patna: Bihar is taking a major step to modernise its cremation facilities by introducing gas-based crematoriums in six cities, including Patna, Gaya, Chhapra, Saharsa, Bhagalpur, and Begusarai. The announcement was made by Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on September 25, . Under the new plan, the Isha Foundation, Coimbatore, will construct and operate the crematoriums on one acre of land in each city, leased for 33 years at a token amount of just Rs1. The MoU was signed between representatives of the Urban Development and Housing Department and the Isha Foundation in the presence of Mr. Choudhary.
Currently, most municipal crematoriums in Bihar use wood for cremation, which contributes to air pollution and unnecessary exploitation of forest resources. While some electric crematoriums exist, many lack proper maintenance and basic facilities for funeral ceremonies. Deputy Chief Minister Choudhary said the new LPG-based crematoriums will not only be environmentally friendly but will also provide better amenities, cleanliness, and a respectful atmosphere for families conducting last rites.
The project was approved by the State Council of Ministers in a meeting held on September 9. The Isha Foundation has already successfully established about 15 gas-based crematoriums in Tamil Nadu, which are considered modern and environmentally safe. Known globally for its work in yoga, meditation, and social welfare, the foundation brings experience in running facilities that combine sustainability with modern infrastructure.
Samrat Choudhary emphasised that this initiative aligns with the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government’s commitment to public welfare. By reducing air pollution, saving forest resources, and improving the facilities at cremation sites, the new crematoriums aim to provide citizens with dignified and safe alternatives to traditional wood-burning cremations. The government hopes that this move will set an example for environmentally responsible funeral practices across India.
