Patna: Many of us believe we are not eating too much sugar. We avoid sweets, ice creams, and soft drinks thinking that is enough to stay healthy. But experts say sugar hides in many everyday foods that we eat without a second thought. Over time, this “hidden sugar” is slowly affecting our health and increasing the risk of serious illnesses.
Take breakfast cereal for example. It looks healthy, but a single bowl can have three to four teaspoons of sugar. That is nearly the entire recommended daily limit of sugar before you even start your day. Flavoured yogurts are another common trap. They are marketed as good for digestion and health, but their sweet taste usually comes from large amounts of added sugar, making them almost like dessert.
Sauces are also on the list. Tomato ketchup, a favourite with samosas and pakoras, is loaded with sugar. Other packaged sauces that we use for cooking or as dips also have high sugar content. Packaged fruit juices are no better. Even if they say “100% fruit juice” on the label, sugar is often added to make them taste better. So, instead of a healthy drink, you are actually having a sweet beverage.
Even tea and coffee — which most people drink multiple times a day — add to the problem. Two or three teaspoons of sugar in every cup means you are consuming a lot more sugar than you think. When added up, this extra sugar every day can lead to obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart problems in the long run.
Doctors recommend small but effective changes. Choose homemade food and drinks instead of packaged ones, read labels carefully before buying, slowly reduce the amount of sugar in tea and coffee, and eat fresh fruits instead of sugary snacks. These simple steps can help control sugar intake and protect your health.
