Bihar Elections: Prashant Kishor Fields Influential Candidates in Narrow-Margin Seats Against BJP

Seats like Gopalganj, Darbhanga, Pranpur, and Sonpur could see triangular contests with BJP and RJD.

Patna: The Prashant Kishor-led Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) has released its first list of candidates for the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections, signaling a potential challenge for the BJP in several key constituencies. The initial list covers 18 seats, including prominent areas such as Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Kumhrar, Sonpur, Pranpur, Ara, and Gopalganj.

Political analysts suggest that the JSP’s entry could create triangular contests in several constituencies where the BJP won by narrow margins in the 2020 elections and subsequent by-elections. Many JSP candidates are considered locally influential, socially active, and young, creating a fresh alternative for voters. In addition, the party’s plans to field bureaucrats and educated candidates have intensified competition in traditionally BJP-held areas.

Impact on BJP and JD(U)

In constituencies where the BJP previously won by slim margins, JSP candidates could split the traditional vote bank, indirectly benefiting the opposition alliance. Analysts note that even if the JSP does not secure a large number of seats, its presence could significantly reduce BJP’s vote share in several regions, particularly in Mithila, Seemanchal, and Magadh.

The JSP’s first list includes candidates with local influence and strong social credentials. PK’s “Jansamvad Yatra” and campaign message of “changing the system” have already resonated with young voters, prompting BJP candidates to treat JSP nominees as serious contenders.

While BJP claims organizational strength and anticipates limited impact from JSP, ground realities suggest that triangular contests could pose real electoral challenges for the party in several constituencies.

Key Contests and Candidates to Watch

  • Darbhanga Rural: JSP fields former DG R.K. Mishra, intensifying competition for BJP candidates.
  • Gopalganj: Dr. Shashi Shekhar Sinha faces Kusum Devi, who narrowly won the last by-election by 2,183 votes.
  • Pranpur: JSP candidate challenges Nisha Singh, who won the 2020 election by 2,972 votes.
  • Sonpur: Chandanlal Mehta from the Kushwaha community contests in a traditional Yadav-Rajput seat, potentially reshaping community vote dynamics.

The JSP’s focus on constituencies with historically narrow victory margins indicates a strategic approach to target BJP’s weak spots. Analysts believe that the unfolding contests in these seats could play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the Bihar Assembly elections.

As campaigning intensifies, all eyes will be on JSP’s ability to dent BJP’s vote share, particularly in constituencies with closely fought previous contests. The party’s emphasis on young and socially engaged candidates is expected to influence voter behavior and potentially alter the traditional political equations in Bihar.
