Patna: In a chilling twist to the Chandan Mishra murder case, nine of the ten police witnesses have turned hostile, citing fear of gangster Omkar Singh alias Sheru. “We feared Sheru would have us killed,” one witness confessed in court. The murder, which took place inside Patna’s Paras Hospital on July 17, was allegedly orchestrated by Sheru from his jail cell in West Bengal’s Purulia district.

According to the 1,000-page case diary and 100-page charge sheet filed by Patna Police, the killing stemmed from a power struggle between two rival gangs. Chandan Mishra, once an associate of Sheru, had grown increasingly influential. Police allege that Sheru, threatened by Chandan’s dominance, conspired to eliminate him through local shooters.

A murder inside a hospital

An eyewitness, whose statement was recorded in court, described the horror of that morning. “We were in the hospital room—me, Chandan Bhaiya, and Durgesh. Chandan Bhaiya was on his bed watching his phone when I went to the bathroom. Suddenly, I heard gunshots. When I came out, Chandan Bhaiya was riddled with bullets, and Durgesh had been shot in the leg. Four men with pistols were standing around the bed,” he said. “I froze in fear and stayed inside until they left.”

The plot hatched from jail

Investigators revealed that Sheru planned the murder from prison, communicating with his associates over the phone. One of them, Nishu, was a close aide who coordinated with his cousin, Tausif alias Badshah — identified as the main shooter. Call records show that Sheru spoke to both Nishu and Badshah the day before the murder.

Before the attack, the shooters stayed at Nishu’s home in Samanpura and surveyed the hospital for three days. On the morning of the killing, they arrived at Paras Hospital under the pretext of visiting a patient. When questioned by the guard, Tausif contacted an acquaintance inside, claiming his friend’s uncle—Chandan Singh—was admitted. The staff, unaware of their true intent, told him the room number.

A night of drinking before the crime

The night before the murder, the assailants held a mutton-and-alcohol party near Raja Bazaar, staying at a hotel under false identities. Early the next morning, they entered the hospital and opened fire on Chandan, killing him instantly. Durgesh, wounded in the leg, survived but has refrained from testifying due to fear of Sheru.

After the shooting, the attackers fled in different directions. Tausif reportedly went to Nishu’s house, and soon after, both fled to Kolkata—dropping Nishu’s sister in Gaya along the way. Nishu’s girlfriend had unknowingly booked two hotel rooms in Kolkata’s New Town area for them before the murder.

In Kolkata, Tausif altered his appearance by cutting his hair after seeing media reports about the case. However, Kolkata Police, in coordination with Bihar STF and Patna Police, arrested the suspects before they could escape to Delhi.

Digital evidence and arrests

CCTV footage captured five men during the shootout. Police have since arrested Tausif alias Badshah, Abhishek, Raviranjan, and Balwant, while one suspect remains at large. Patna Police are now seeking Sheru’s remand for interrogation. Officers believe the contract killers were promised Rs 25 lakh for the hit, to be divided among them after the murder.

A police official stated, “We have substantial digital evidence, including phone records linking Sheru to the shooters. A speedy trial will be conducted.”

The charge sheet was filed two months and 28 days after the incident, with digital trails and eyewitness testimony forming the core of the case.
