Patna: Bihar is set to get another landmark project on the banks of the Ganges — a new 75-kilometre-long Marine Drive connecting Munger to Bhagalpur, modelled after the scenic Patna Marine Drive. Estimated to cost Rs. 8,300 crore, the project aims to transform riverfront mobility and tourism in eastern Bihar.
The project, officially titled the Munger–Bhagalpur Marine Drive, will be constructed by Adani Enterprises Limited under the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model, with a four-year completion target. Once completed, the company will also maintain the project for 15 years.
According to officials, construction will begin in December 2025, following completion of land acquisition and alignment surveys. The Bihar State Road Development Corporation Limited (BSRDCL) has been designated as the nodal agency.
Project Details and Phases
The Marine Drive will stretch from Safiabada in Munger to Sabour in Bhagalpur, divided into two phases:
- Phase I: Munger’s Safiabada to Sultanganj via Ajgaivinath Dham — 35 km, costing Rs. 4,450 crore.
- Phase II: Sultanganj to Sabour in Bhagalpur — 40.8 km, costing Rs. 3,842 crore.
Officials confirmed that land acquisition will be completed by November, and survey work across villages including Ganganiya, Kamar Ganj, Masdi, and Akbarnagar has already been finalized. The road will be four-lane and partly elevated, designed to withstand seasonal flooding along the Ganges.
Adani’s Role and Modern Design
Adani Enterprises secured the contract through a competitive bidding process. Sources said the road will integrate modern drainage systems, LED lighting, and eco-friendly embankments, making it one of Bihar’s most advanced riverfront corridors.
The new Marine Drive will provide an alternative high-speed route to existing state highways, easing traffic congestion between Bhagalpur and Munger while offering a tourism-friendly riverfront view similar to Mumbai’s and Patna’s Marine Drives.
Official Statement
BSRDCL’s Chief General Manager, Bablu Kumar, confirmed that “the project has been approved in two parts, with construction expected to begin by December. Adani Enterprises has been tasked with completing it within 1,460 days.”
He added that the Marine Drive “will not only boost local connectivity but also reshape the urban and tourism landscape of the Ganga belt.”
