Patna: A 40-year-old woman was killed in a road accident on Atal Path in Patna on Wednesday evening, sparking outrage among local residents who demanded action against speeding vehicles.
The victim, Manorama Devi, a resident of Indrapuri Road No. 11, was struck by a speeding Scorpio near Indrapuri around 6 p.m. while crossing the road on her way home from work. She was reportedly dragged for nearly 30 metres before the vehicle sped away.
Manorama, who worked as a domestic help in the Boring Road area, was rushed to a private hospital in Patliputra and later referred to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), but she succumbed to her injuries before reaching there.
Witnesses said that the SUV was travelling at high speed from Digha towards R Block when it hit the woman. Locals tried to stop the driver, but he managed to flee the scene. “Speeding vehicles are a constant danger on Atal Path. Accidents happen here almost every week,” said one resident.
Manorama lived with her only son, Deepak Kumar, who does odd jobs to support the family. Originally from Gaya district, she had been living in Patna for several years. Her husband lives separately, relatives said.
Following the incident, Patliputra police arrived at the site and began examining CCTV footage to trace the vehicle. “The Scorpio’s registration number has been identified, and efforts are underway to locate the driver,” said Station House Officer (SHO) Atulesh Kumar.
Locals have urged the administration to install speed breakers, impose strict speed limits, and deploy more police patrols along the Atal Path to prevent further tragedies.
