Patna: The Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has implemented revised minimum wage rates for daily-wage labourers, offering substantial financial relief to thousands of outsourced workers employed across the city. The decision aligns with the Bihar government’s revised wage structure, effective from April 1, 2025, and is designed to strengthen the economic security of low-income urban workers.
According to PMC officials, the move will directly benefit 4,887 workers, who will begin receiving increased wages from this month. The corporation described the step as a recognition of the “hard work and unwavering commitment” of the labour force that keeps the city functioning every day.
Revised minimum wage rates
-
Unskilled workers: Rs. 424 per day
-
Semi-skilled workers: Rs. 440 per day
-
Skilled workers: Rs. 536 per day
-
Highly skilled workers: Rs. 654 per day
Municipal authorities said the increased wages will not only boost household income for thousands of families but also strengthen Patna’s civic operations — especially sanitation and neighbourhood services.
‘A step towards dignity and security’
Addressing workers and officials, Mayor Sita Sahu said the wage hike represents “not just financial support but respect for the city’s workforce.” She added that improved earnings would enhance worker morale and productivity, ultimately supporting cleaner neighbourhoods and better municipal services.
Sahu noted that the workforce is largely supplied through outsourced agencies and that the new rates follow notifications issued by both the Urban Development and Housing Department and the Labour Resources Department.
Oversight and accountability for contractors
Municipal Commissioner Yashpal Meena emphasised that the corporation will ensure strict enforcement of timely payments. Regular review meetings will be held between outsourcing agencies and PMC management to maintain transparency and address worker grievances.
“All agencies have been instructed to process wages promptly and resolve labour issues without delay,” Meena said, adding that this accountability is crucial for maintaining the corporation’s service quality.
The event was attended by Deputy Mayor Reshmi Kumari, members of the Standing Committee, ward councillors, senior PMC officials, employees, and representatives of outsourced agencies.
